Preoperative Preparation
- Consultation with clinical examination to assess the type of gynecomastia
- Blood hormone test to rule out an endocrine cause
- Mammogram and/or breast ultrasound
- Pre-operative anesthesia consultation
- Smoking cessation at least 1 month before the procedure
- Discontinuation of anticoagulants and anti-inflammatory medications
- Order a chest compression garment (bolero)
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and lasts between one and one and a half hours. Depending on the type of gynecomastia, the surgeon will perform liposuction to remove excess fat (adipomastia) and/or glandular excision through a small, discreet periareolar incision to remove breast tissue. The two techniques are often combined for optimal results. The procedure is completed by applying a compression dressing or a compression garment.
Postoperative Follow-up and Recovery
- Simple after-effects with moderate pain (similar to muscle soreness). Compression garment to be worn for 4 to 6 weeks. Swelling and bruising to subside in 2 to 3 weeks. 5 to 10 days off work. Resumption of sports activities after 4 to 6 weeks.
Expected Results
The first results are visible immediately after the swelling subsides. The final result can be assessed after 3-6 months. The results are permanent because the removed glandular tissue does not regenerate. However, significant weight gain can lead to the re-establishment of excess fat.
Add skin tightening
Liposuction removes fat; it does not act on skin elasticity. Where the skin has lost its firmness, liposuction alone may leave some laxity.
